About 11 days ago I got into a minor car accident at an intersection on Gold Star Blvd. It was a rainy Friday night and surprisingly, I was going to the movies and not to the nearest pub. The insurance people wanted to total my car, but let's just say they smartened up fast.
My friends know I don't have much experience in the driving department and learning in Worcester is probably not a great place to start. I actually avoided the highway at ALL costs until I started school at Clark. I figured going to school in the city would force me to drive, and it has. Unfortunately, s**t happens and you have to get back on the road. Driving in Worcester is a little different than driving in a small town with two intersections. People in the city like to:

- Drive fast and change lanes for fun
- Disobey street signs and traffic lights
- Walk in the middle of the street with small children
- Beep
I don't know if I will ever be an aggressive city driver, but I hope I can keep up! The Silver Fox is at home in Ipswich waiting to be fixed and in the mean time I will be walking, hitch hiking, or taking a cab.
Whatever happened to horse and buggies?

Oh Heidi, Worcester drivers are mean (me in included.) You'll just have to be extra cautious when driving. Once you have your car, you'll have to get over the fear. I took me a good 7 months to get over the accident I had in March. Mine is a fun story that I'll tell you about later:) At the time, my driving experience was the same as yours now. Keep driving!
ReplyDeleteI like how the bullet points broke up the post! Your writing is really enjoyable to read too :)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. I am just afraid to cross road in Worcester because of careless driving. The people in Worcester cross the road even in red light. Should I follow them when they are crossing the road in red light? I always got confused and waited for walk signal.
ReplyDeleteDriving in Worcester is a terrifying skill to master. It's the only place I drive in regularly, and I know a lot of people who are also overwhelmed by Worcester driving. Some tips:
ReplyDeleteTake the left as soon as the light turns green, if not before.
No one knows what a hand signal is, if you have a blinker out just stop abruptly and honk back at the mad drivers behind you.
...you'll get the hang of it. I promise.
The worst is Kelly Square by 290; it's like 5 or 6 streets converging and it's terrifying.
ReplyDeleteI love your posts Heidi! And I'm sorry about your car accident.. but I promise you will get the hang of driving in Worcester! I do agree with Jeremy.. Kelly Square is the scariest area to drive. Just remember to be confident on the road.. don't let all of us mean Worcester drivers scare you :)
